- The Proteas are sweating over the fitness of fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and Glenton Stuurman ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka.
- Proteas coach Mark Boucher hinted that if fit, Stuurman could make his Test debut at Centurion on Saturday.
- Boucher said that the Proteas will make a call on Friday on the starting XI.
Proteas coach Mark Boucher revealed that they are monitoring the fitness of fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and Glenton Stuurman ahead of Saturday's opening Test against Sri Lanka.
The Proteas are already without their star bowler Kagiso Rabada, who is not medically cleared to play after suffering a right adductor strain.
Boucher told reporters on Thursday that Ngidi "hasn't been feeling great" although he bowled well at Thursday's training session.
Ngidi has had more than his fair share of injury worries in the past, with the most recent case seeing the 24-year-old miss the England four-match Test series earlier this year.
Boucher admitted that while there's doubt over Ngidi and Stuurman's availability, he is optimistic that the fast bowling duo will "come through".
"Without giving too much away, Lungi hasn't been feeling great and Glenton had a bit of a bruise," said Boucher.
"I was a little bit more worried yesterday (Wednesday) but today (Thursday) they came through nicely.
"Lungi bowled really well today at training. We gave him a little bit of an extra load to push himself and he came through with flying colours. Glenton got a niggle but seemed to come through.
"If they wake up tomorrow (Friday) feeling good, then they've put their names forward for selection, which is always nice for us to have."
Stuurman received his maiden Proteas call up after standout performances with the ball for the Warriors in the 4-Day Franchise Series.
If Stuurman is fit and ready, he will become South Africa's 111th Test cap since readmission.
Meanwhile, CSA confirmed on Thursday that the full squad all returned negative results from their fourth and final round of Covid-19 testing before the Test series against Sri Lanka.
Play on Saturday starts at 10:00.
