THANE: The general body of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has given a go-ahead to construct and operate the light urban rail transit system (LURTS) instead of the proposed internal Thane Metro claiming the project will save over Rs 6,000 crore of the taxpayers' money.
The approval comes nearly 10 months after TOI reported that the TMC was mulling to switch over from the city Metro system to the LURTS citing financial viability.
TMC officials said the installation and maintenance of the LURTS is less compared to the city Metro.
