Boxing News: BFI elections likely to be held electronically, High Court ask for poll schedule on January 8

Boxing News: The Delhi High court has asked the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) that its elections can be held electronically and has directed the sports body to announce a confirmed schedule on January 8, 2021.

Justice Jayant Nath in his December 18 direction on Uttar Pradesh Amateur Boxing Association plea seeking a direction to BFI to conduct its elections. The state board had plead the high court to conduct its elections on December 18 as per the original election schedule or any other day before December 31.

The court made the first observation that while BFI was all set to hold an Emergency General Meeting of the General Council on December 24 via video call, it was claiming it was “feasible or advisable to hold the elections also via electronic form”.

“A large number of associations are conducting the elections through electronic form,” the court further observed.

It further added, that any decision taken in the meeting on December 24 meeting regarding the extension of the term of the President and executive council of BFI, “”shall be subject to further orders of this court”.

During the hearing, a counsel appearing for Secretary-General of BFI said there was no need to defer the polls on grounds of COVID-19 pandemic.

The association moved the high court after BFI President had issued a notice about postponing the election on grounds of pandemic.

A meeting on the election matter will be decided on today (Thursday).
