Jallikattu organisers in Madurai were elated after the government’s announcement allowing the bull taming sport to be held next year.
Madurai:
Scores of people, at Vadivasal, Alanganallur, most renowned for jallikattu, distributed sweets and burst crackers as well. J Sundararajan, president, Alanganallur Jallikattu Vizha Kuzhu, said, earlier, there was uncertainty on whether the event would be held owing to COVID-19 restrictions. Since most programmes were cancelled, many from the local community had been apprehensive.
Thanking the government, he said the organising committee would adhere to all instructions by the government at the venue. AK Kannan, president, Avaniapuram Jallikattu Vizha Kuzhu and Thenkal Paasana Vivasayigal Sangam, had even made a representation before Madurai Collector T Anbalagan 10 days ago for permission to organise the sport at Avaniapuram. The Collector would soon convene a meeting with organizers and issue guidelines. Unlike several years ago, jallikattu at Avaniapuram lacked gusto the last two times it was held because of being held under the court’s radar. Such events were organised by a committee headed by a retired judge.
