Chennai Corporation drops move to collect user fees from Jan 1

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) A day after announcing it and in the
wake of stiff opposition from various quarters, the Greater
Chennai Corporation on Thursday withdrew its proposal to
collect user fees for solid waste management from residents
and traders from January one, 2021 onwards.
In a press release here, Corporation Commissioner G Prakash
said the user fee charges proposed to be charged under the
Solid Waste Management Act, 2016 were postponed indefinitely.
He said the proposal to collec user fee was postponed on the
advise of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in view of
the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Corporation had announced that from January one onwards,
residents and traders will have to pay user fees for solid waste
collection in the city.
According to the solid waste management bylaws 2019, every
property owner has to pay user charges along with property
tax for collection of garbage in his neighborhood.
The Corporation has planned to collect Rs 100 a month for a
residential building with a built up area of 2,400 sqft. It will be
Rs 10 a month for owners of houses with a built up area of less
than 500 sqft.
As a result, property tax for the owner of a 2,400 sqft house
will increase by Rs 1,200 a year.
Luxury hotels will have to pay user charges of Rs 5,000 and
hospitals Rs 4,000 per month.
The Corporation's move drew flak from various political parties
and organisations.
Opposition DMK president M K Stalin flayed the civic body's decision
to tax people at a time when they were struggling to cope with the
pandemic and has imposed more burden on the people.
In a statement here, he said people had lost their livelihood, small and
medium industries were going through an economic crisis and commercial
complexes, theatres and hotels were yet to feel any relief.
The Corporation’s decision to collect tax at this juncture would further
destabilise their functioning, he said, adding, the civic body should have
elicited the views of the public before taking the decision.
Mr Stalin urged the Chief Minister to direct the Local Administration Ministry
to withdraw the decision. “If he fails to do so, the DMK, when elected to power,
will cancel the tax and also order a probe into the alleged misuse of fund by
the Chennai Corporation,” he cautioned.
In a tweet today, Mr Stalin said the Corporation has withdrawn the proposed
user fee after the DMK warned that it would do so after it came to power.
