Chetan Sharma Appointed New Chairman of Selectors; Debashish Mohanty & Abey Kuruvilla Named in Panel

Former India pacer Chetan Sharma will be heading India's senior selection committee. He alongside Debashish Mohanty and Abey Kuruvilla will be part of the selection panel, the BCCI said in a tweet.

They were recommended by a three member Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) which comprised of former India cricketers Madan Lal, Rudra Pratap Singh and Sulakshana Naik. The CAC met virtually and made the recommendations to the BCCI. Earlier there were rumours of Ajit Agrkar being shortlisted for the post of chairman of selectors. He was the most capped player from the list of candidates who had applied -- and has appeared in 26 Tests and 191 ODIs.

The new panel was formed on the sidelines of the BCCI's 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM) here. The selection panel also has former India players Sunil Joshi and Harvinder Singh.Sharma is a former player who represented India in 23 Tests and 65 ODIs during an 11-year-old international career, the highlight of which was his hat-trick in the 1987 World Cup.
"The committee further recommended Mr Chetan Sharma for the role of Chairman of the senior men's selection committee based on seniority (total number of Test matches). The CAC [Cricket Advisory Committee] will review the candidates after a one-year period and make the recommendations to the BCCI," the press release said.
"I am really thankful to BCCI for having trust in me and I will give my more than 100 per cent for Indian cricket," Sharma told IANS. The CAC, comprising Madan Lal, Rudra Pratap Singh, and Sulakshana Naik, had on Thursday met virtually and conducted interviews to select three members of the senior selection committee.
The interviews lasted between 11.30 am to 4 pm and were done virtually.
Altogether 11 candidates had applied for the four posts: Chetan Sharma, Maninder Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Ratra, Nikhil Chopra, Ajit Agarkar, Abey Kuruvilla, Nayan Mongia, Shiv Sundar Das, Debashish Mohanty and Ranadeb Bose.
International experience of selectors picked on Thursday:
Chetan Sharma (Age 54): 23 Tests, 65 ODIs
Abey Kuruvilla (Age 52): 10 Tests, 25 ODIs
Debashish Mohanty (Age 44): 2 Tests, 45 ODIs
International experience of selectors picked in March:
Sunil Joshi (Age 50 years): 15 Tests, 69 ODIs
Harvinder Singh (Age 43): 3 Tests, 16 ODIs
At the age of 16, Sharma started playing first-class cricket for Haryana and made his Test debut aged 18, a year after making his ODI debut against the West Indies in December 1983.As per the BCCI constitution, the candidate with the most Test caps becomes the chief selector.
