JD(U) suffers setback in Arunachal as 6 MLAs jump ship to BJP

Itanagar, Dec 24 (UNI) In a major setback for the Arunachal Pradesh unit of Janata Dal (United), six of its MLAs have shifted their allegiance to the ruling BJP, reducing the strength of its lawmaker to one in the 60-member Assembly.

The People's Party of Arunachal (PPA)'s lone lawmaker has also switched sides to the saffron party.

The six JD(U) MLAs who parted away from the party and sided with the BJP, include Talem Taboh, Jikke Tako, Hayeng Mangfi, Dorjee Wangdi Kharma, Dongru Siongju and Kanggong Taku.

Kardo Nyigyor is the lawmaker from PPA who shifted loyalty to the ruling party. He was suspended from the party earlier this month for his alleged anti-party activities.

Post their change in party affiliation, the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (APLA) has published two separate bulletins on Wednesday, informing the lawmakers to have filed fresh form-III as required under Rule 4 of the members of Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1987.

With this, the ruling BJP’s strength in the 60-member House now stands at 48, Congress and National People’s Party (NPP) four each, JD(U)one and three Independents.

Notably, the development comes ahead of the announcement of results of the Panchayat and Municipal elections on December 26.
