SA Rugby said in a statement on Thursday they would refer the findings regarding Jurie Roux’s misappropriation of University of Stellenbosch funds to their legal advisors.
News24 broke the news that the SA Rugby CEO, Roux, was ordered to pay R37 million back to the university, which the arbiter found was misappropriated during his time at the institution’s finance department.
SA wrote in their statement:
The Executive Council of SA Rugby has noted the reports of the arbitration involving Jurie Roux and his former employer, Stellenbosch University.
We have referred the matter to our legal advisers for their advice on governance matters, as we have throughout this process.
We further note that the process allows for the parties to lodge an appeal, and we will make no further comment until the outcome of any such appeal is known.
Roux joined SA Rugby in 2010 and the matter versus the University of Stellenbosch has plagued him since a KPMG audit in 2013 found financial irregularities in expenditure during Roux’s time at the university.
However, last month, Afrikaans newspaper Rapport reported that Roux’s SA Rugby contract had been extended up until after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.
