A blend of contemporary ruffles and traditional weaves goes a long way, suggests Samantha Akkineni
In 2017, as Telangana's handloom ambassador, Samantha Akkineni, launched a platform called Woven that was dedicated to championing the cause of the Southern Indian state’s weavers. “I have been travelling across the state for the past few months to understand the problems that plague our weavers at a grass root level. We want weavers to get due recognition, and also restore respect for their art,” she told Vogue back then. The star’s obsession with the simplicity of the six-yard drape has only grown over the years. Now, it is not uncommon to spot the actor in traditional handloom or heritage silk weaves for her films’ promotions. From linen silk drapes with Khatwa work by Anavila to Raw Mango and Kshitij Jalori’s lustrous Benarasi weaves, Akkineni’s repertoire is full of designer must-haves. So when the actor gives cues on the pieces to watch out for this season, we take notes. Here, Samantha Akkineni curates some must-have pieces from Myntra’s traditional collection.
According to Akkineni, she feels at ease in saris and Indian outfits. Basis her curation, a mix of contemporary silhouettes and heritage weaves goes a long way. The star recommends adding a modern ruffled number in jewel tones of ruby or ebony, which can be easily turned cocktail-ready with statement belts. No sari collection is complete without a classic Kanjeevaram silk with zari details or a Benarasi weave in vibrant colours that instantly stand out. In her edit, there’s also lightweight options that won’t weigh you down, such as neutral-toned Chanderi and craft-heavy bandhini drapes with Kutchi embroidery borders.
