Gurudev started Visva Bharati with the thought of education and knowledge for all: PM

Santiniketan, Dec 24 (UNI) "Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore had started this great institution with the thought of education and knowledge for all. Today, as we celebrate 100 years of this prestigious institution, we take that thought forward to ensure a good education reaches all, '' said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday and asked university students to help local craftsmen sell their handiwork items online to the global market.
Addressing the centenary celebrations of Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan, West Bengal, through video conferencing, Mr Modi said, " It is a great honour for me to be able to speak at this historic event.
I thank and congratulate each and everyone who has contributed to
making this institution a truly great one. "
''Our nation is taking forward the message and teachings given at Visva-Bharati. Be it the international solar alliance or the Paris Climate accord, It
is important to know that India is the only country in the world that
is working at pace with the goals set in the Paris Climate Accord, " the Prime Minister stated.
" The Bhakti Andolan era, spanning centuries, has given India
immeasurable values and lessons to learn from and be inspired from.
Bhakti Andolan brought us all together, then the Gyan Andolan gave us
knowledge and finally the Karm Andolan helped us execute our plans to
take the nation forward beginning with our struggle for independence, " Mr Modi said.
" Be it Visva-Bharati University, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh
Muslim University, Delhi University, Jamia Millia Islamia University,
Andhra University, Anna Malai University, and several others are
premier institutions and came up around the same time, in the same
era, and gave momentum to India's thirst for knowledge, " he added.
" And learning not just from what is happening in India, but India has
always been open to learn from the world over. Take your University's
name for example. That itself shows India's approach and views on
education - Visva-Bharati - which joined Maa Bharati with the Visva
(world) and we as a people have always pursued education and greatly
valued it, " Mr Modi observed.
'' Today, as more and more people are getting a good education, we now
have to work to build a strong and wise nation - self-reliant one. We must take inspiration from all those who have
contributed to making India great over the centuries and millennia, " he said.
''We must also keep in mind the India that our freedom fighters envisioned
when they fought of our independence. And that is why we are now at
the stage to create an Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
We must take India to the world, promote local to global. And to
achieve that we need to first be vocal about local. I urge you all to
promote local manufacturing and services, " Mr Modi stated.
The Governor of West Bengal and Union Education Minister were also
present in the event.
Mr Modi asked university students to help local craftsmen sell their handiwork items online to the global market.
Mr Modi is also the Chancellor of the prestigious university, which completed 100 years today.
Mr Modi stated, “For the current year the Poush Mela couldn't be held because of Covid 19 pandemic. This is the third time in its set of experiences that Poush Mela couldn't be held. As the country is offering significance to the utilization of local items, I would ask students to guide local craftsmen to promote their painstaking work online. This will guarantee our local products arrive at the global market."
He also said that Visva-Bharati had contributed to the development of the nation and it had invigorated the nation during our freedom fighting movement. It assumed a major part in building new India.
Discussing Tagore's association with Gujarat, Mr Modi said, "He was a frequent visitor to Gujarat. He had set up a culture of one country initially."
"Visva-Bharati is the epitome of vocal for local. As Tagore said 'Jodi Tor Daak Shune Keu Naa Aase, Tawbe Ekla Chalo Re', India now is such a nation who can run independently. We are not dependent on others", concluded Mr Modi.
West Bengal Governor and Rector Visva Bharati Jagdeep Dhankhar on the occasion of Centenary Celebrations of Foundation Day of Visva Bharati said, " GURUDEV thoughts capsule and manifest the sublimity of our ethos of learning. "
" As Governor of State of West Bengal, I deem it an honour to be associated with the Centenary Celebrations of the FOUNDATION DAY of VISVA BHARATI. It is a great privilege to be present on this auspicious and momentous occasion, " he added.
" It is gratifying that our worthy Prime Minister Narendra Modiji in a while will be setting the tone of this day and the year to follow. Today we stand on the cusp of the centenary of the Foundation of Visva-Bharati, an institution of national importance, " Mr Dhankhar stated.
" The occasion reminds us that GURUDEV TAGORE envisioned BHARAT as a POWERHOUSE of PROGRESS and LEARNING.
GURUDEV thoughts capsule and manifest the sublimity of our ethos of learning, " he noted.
" His resolve and foundational contributions as also the visionary leadership of the Country would surely fructify into BHARAT regaining its status of VISVA GURU, " the Governor observed.
" The NEW NATIONAL EDUCATION EDUCATION POLICY, rightly hailed as a game-changer, is in varied ways influenced by Gurudev’s emphasis on learning, " he opined.
" Qualitative and significant shift from usual learning to emphasis on holistic education is a key factor of this policy. It rightly lays greater emphasis on independent thinking and creative impulses. "
" New Education Policy will surely pave way for the emergence of scenario envisioned by Tagore in his reflection “Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high; Where knowledge is free," he stated.
" The foundational mantra of Gurudev was to rise and awaken oneself in education, fellow feeling and breadth of the soul. We all need to practise and disseminate these wholesome concepts. "
" During the Centenary Year of FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATIONS, there will be activities that would help us exploit our talent, realize our potential and generate optimism for Bharat becoming Visva Guru again. "
" Ancient India was home to world-class institutions Nalanda and Taxila to name few. Time is ripe for us to take this lead now. Visva Bharati Foundation Day Centenary celebrations will surely generate vibes that will directionally catalyze this wholesome scenario, " the Governor said.

" It is in this spirit that we stand here together to celebrate the founding of this great institution, " Mr Dhankhar added.
The Governor called upon the Vice-Chancellor, faculty and students of Visva-Bharati to take Tagore’s message forward and to fulfil his dream of creating a bridge between human beings and widen knowledge across frontiers and to practice the ethical life that he had envisioned for this ashrama.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Bratya Basu criticised Mr Modi for linking Tagore to his home state Gujarat, saying “the great Bard was a universal poet."
“Tagore is a universal poet. So why the Prime Minister is so enthused on establishing Tagore’s links with the state of Gujarat. It’s unfair to limit the great bard’s relevance to a particular region,” commented Basu.
