Zoom may launch an email service in 2021 to rival Gmail
Not many people were using Zoom as much as they do before 2020 came. Yet, the pandemic which forced millions of people around the world to rely on video conferences and Zoom became a household name. It looks like that the US-based company isn’t looking to sit on its laurels. According to a report by The Information, Zoom is working on a email service to compete with Google and Microsoft. Not only that, the company is also reportedly looking at launching a calendar app.

The report states that Zoom may start testing its email service as early as next year. However, there’s no word on development of the calendar app.

Zoom’s biggest competitors are Microsoft and Google, which offer a bundle of services, including email, videoconferencing tools, Calder apps among others. While a lot of companies — including Google, Apple — have extended work from home till second half of 2021, it could possible that some companies will eventually start getting employees back at work. If — and when — that happens, employees will cut down their usage of videoconferencing apps and that won’t bode too well for Zoom. To launch an email service might just be what Zoom could need in a post-pandemic world.

2020 has been an extraordinary year for Zoom. At the beginning of the year, it’s market capitalisation value was close $19 billion. It was reported that in November 2020, Zoom’s value had shot up to close to $140 billion. Despite a few security glitches and issues, Zoom has had quite a dream run in 2020. Launching an email service could very well be the next big step for Zoom to take in order to compete with the likes of Google and Microsoft.
