Airtel adds more wireless subscribers than any telcos for 3rd straight month; RJio adds over 2.2M subs, Vodafone Idea lost 2.7M

Bharti Airtel continues to add more new wireless subscribers than any other telcos since the past three months, the latest data of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (Trai).

While telecom giant Reliance Jio in terms of market share took the second spot in new additions of wireless customers. However, Airtel has outrun RJio with a massive gap. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, continues to lose heavy subscriber base.

TRAI has released telecom subscription performance for October 2020.

According to Trai's report, Airtel recorded net additions of nearly 3.7M wireless subscribers, while RJio made nearly 2.23M net additions.

Airtel started to make higher net additions than compared to RJio since August 2020. In July, Airtel's net addition was over 3.26M, while RJio held the top spot with over 3.55M net additions.

In August 2020, Airtel added nearly 2.9M new subscribers while RJio added over 1.84M subscribers. In September 2020, Airtel added nearly 3.78M new customers compared to RJio which added 1.46M new customers.

However, the case for Vodafone Idea does not improve. The company lost about  2.66M subscribers in October 2020 compared to 4.65M lost in September, 1.23M in August and 3.73M in July this year.

Notably, BSNL which had recorded net additions in the past months, with its subscriber base declining by 10,208 customers. Meanwhile, MTNL and Reliance Communications continue to lose 7,307 and 1,488 customers respectively in October 2020.

In terms of market share, RJio continues to maintain dominance with 35.28% followed by Airtel with 28.68%, Vodafone Idea with 25.42% and BSNL with 10.33%.

Overall, the total wireless subscribers increased to 1,151.81M in October 2020, compared to 1,148.58M in the previous month.

Total number of telephone subscribers also rose to 1,171.80M in October against 1,168.66M in September this year.
