Asian markets close higher on pre-holiday trading

Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and South Korea advanced in light trading ahead of Christmas and new year holidays.

Asian stock markets rose on Wednesday amid pre-holiday trading. Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and South Korea saw huge buying sentiments ahead of Christmas and new year holidays.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 208.64 points or 0.80% higher at 26,325.59. Japanese Nikkei closed 88.40 points or 0.33% higher. Shanghai Composite ended with 25.54 points or 0.76% gains at 3,382.32. Korean Kospi ended 26.14 points or 0.96% higher. 

SGX Nifty traded 0.53% higher while market in Taiwan was also higher.

Set Composite was 0.66% lower and market in Jakarta was also marginally lower.

Overnight, Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index lost 0.2% after US President Donald Trump criticized the aid plan approved by Congress. He urged lawmakers to raise payments to the public.

Dow Jones closed lower by 200 points while Nasdaq closing higher by 65 points. IT stocks led the gainers while energy & financials logged selling pressure.

Oil prices continued to slip on Wednesday amid fresh Covid 19 strain across Europe. Benchmark Brent Crude was trading 0.82% lower at USD 49.67 per barrel.
