The Gupkar Alliance, an grouping of six parties, has taken a significant lead over the BJP in the District Development Council (DDC) polls held last week in J&K. Counting is still under way.

The BJP has won 70 seats, NC 56, independents 43, PDP 26, Congress 21, Apni Party 10, Peoples Conference six, CPI(M) five, JK Peoples Movement three, National Panthers Party two, BSP one and Peoples Democratic Front one, according to the figures of the election commission.

The Gupkar alliance has won 96 seats. Out of 280, results were declared only for 244 seats. Counting on two seats was stopped following the reports that two females contesting were hailing from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and married in Kashmir.

The BJP is likely to have their district chairpersons from the Jammu region's Samba, Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Doda districts.

The recently-floated J&K Apni Party put up a good show in Srinagar, winning four of the 14 segments, while the other regional parties managed to win a single seat each. Seven independents were declared winners from the other segments.

PDP’s Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, who was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), won from Pulwama. Independent candidate Safina Baig, wife of ex-PDP leader Muzaffar Hussian Baig, won from Sangrama in north Kashmir.

Senior PDP leader A.R. Veeri's son has won from Anantnag’s Bijbehara segment.

J&K Pradesh Congress Committee chief G.A. Mir's son lost the elections in south Kashmir’s Anantnag.
