Arunachal local body elections: Poll percentage enhances by 20 pc

Itanagar, Dec 23 (UNI) The polling percentage in the elections to Panchayats and Municipalities has substantially increased by little more than 20 percent as the State Election Commission (SEC) has revised it to 73.04 percent as against 52.89 percent announced last night.

Briefing newsmen here on Wednesday, State Election Commissioner Hage Kojeen said that an estimated 73.04 percent turnout recorded in the local body polls for which voting was held at 1,472 polling stations across the State.

He, however, said that the polling percentage is likely to increase as reports from Upper Subansiri and East Kameng districts are awaited while informing that polling teams from a few polling booths in the interior areas are yet to report back to the collection centres.

Longding district has recorded the highest poll percentage at 86.07 percent, followed by Lower Dibang Valley at 85, Kojeen said.

“We have been able to conduct the elections very peacefully in Arunachal Pradesh. No major incident reported so far,” he said.

Informing that basing on the reports of District Election Officers (DEOs) from Longding, Kamle and Upper Subansiri districts regarding snatching of ballots etc, Kojeen said, “Commission has ordered re-polling in eight polling stations, including five in Upper Subansiri, two in Kamle and one in Longding districts on December 24.”

During tomorrow’s re-polling extra care will be taken to avert any untoward incident, he said.

Voting was held on Tuesday for 141 out of 242 Zilla Parishad constituencies and 1,702 out of 8,215 Gram Panchayat seats, and 23 wards (out of 28), including 15 under Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and eight under Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC).

Altogether 6,500 candidates, including 99 for Zilla Parishads and 6401 for Gram Panchayat seats, were declared elected unopposed. Under IMC, five corporators were declared elected uncontested.

As per the SEC, elections to 110 GP seats will not be held due to single nomination rejection or there was no candidate, and the Commission will take a final call after the electoral process of the current phase is over.
The SEC has issued notification for election to the 4-Hawai North ZP seat in Anjaw district and polling will be held on January 11 next.

Asked about the ‘fate’ of elections to Vijaynagar ZP constituency seat along with 40 GPM seats where polling had been kept in abeyance for various reasons, the top election official said, “We have deferred the election considering law and order situation. It is up to the state Government to come out with specific solution to the issue. On the basis of Government’s recommendation, the Commission will be considering the fresh schedule. ”

Counting of votes will be held on December 26.
