Disappearing Messages: Can send messages that disappear
WhatsApp finally got disappearing messages feature. You can send messages that disappear on WhatsApp by enabling disappearing messages. Once enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days.
WhatsApp Payments: Allows users to pay using WhatsApp
WhatsApp Payments finally came out of beta this year, three years after it was launched in India. The feature is now available to all WhatsApp users. WhatsApp Payments offers peer-to-peer money transfer and does not come with other features like bill payments or integration to shopping websites or wallet.
Customisable wallpapers: Can have different and personalized wallpapers for chats
Till sometime back, WhatsApp users could set only one wallpaper for all the chats. Last month, the company introduced the feature of customisable wallpapers. Using this feature, users can now send different wallpapers for different chats. There’s also option to have photos as wallpaper.
Permanent Mute option: Silent chat/group forever
WhatsApp rolled out a permanent mute option for chats. This means that users can now put a chat on mute permanently. Using the Always mute feature, users can now mute their personal chats and WhatsApp groups indefinitely.
Animated stickers: Stickers get animated effects
The year saw animated stickers coming to WhatsApp. The company introduced animated stickers to make the conversation more fun and interesting. Presently, there are four animated sticker packs available for download -- Chummy Chum Chums, Rico’s Sweet Life, Bright Days and Moody Foodies.
Group video calls: Can do video call with 8 people at the same time
WhatsApp added group support for video calls. The company introduced the feature which allowed users to call up to eight people simultaneously.
Advanced search options: can search for photos, documents and more
WhatsApp also introduced Advanced Search functionality in the app which helps users to find not only text messages but also look for photos, GIFs, videos and other documents.
QR codes: Makes it easy to add new contact
WhatsApp QR Code feature makes it easier for users to add new contacts. It helps users to share their contact details with others through customised QR codes. Users can find their customised QR code in the Settings section of the app on the top right side in front of the name and profile picture.
Dark mode: Is ‘easier’ on eyes
The year witnessed the public rollout of Dark Mode on WhatsApp. The company claims that Dark Mode helps in reducing strain on the eyes.
New storage management tool: Notifies users about storage
WhatsApp also introduced a storage management tool recently which will automatically notify users about the storage getting full on their smartphones and let them delete junk data or photos, videos to free up storage space on the smartphone.
