Maharashtra: Sub-registrar held for graft in Raigad district

THANE: A sub-registrar has been arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from man in Khalapur town of neighbouring Raigad district in Maharashtra, an official from the Anti-Corruption Bureau said on Wednesday.
The Raigad unit of the ACB's Thane division nabbed Surendra S Gupte (53), who has been charged under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the official said.
According to the ACB, the arrested accused had demanded Rs 5 lakh from the complainant for registering his family members in the purchase deal registration records.
After negotiations, he settled for Rs 3.50 lakh, following which the complainant approached the ACB, it was stated.
The accused was caught while accepting an instalment of Rs 1 lakh from the complainant at the registration office, the official said, adding that further probe is underway.
