Virus claims 10 lives in 24 hours; death toll since the outbreak has risen to 8,713

A one-day-old baby was amongst the 10 people who succumbed to COVID in Pune district on Monday.

The death toll since the outbreak has risen to 8,713, said the district health officials.

The newborn from Aurangabad was reportedly brought dead to the Sassoon General Hospitals on December 20. He has tested positive for COVID, confirmed the officials.

Within the last 24 hours, the district also saw 361new cases, taking the tally to 3,56,819. Also, 589 people recovered; 3,39,610 have battled the virus so far.

Among the new positive cases, 163 are in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits, 103 in Pimpri-Chinchwad, 79 in rural areas and 16 cantonment areas.

There are 5,098 active cases in Pune city, out of which 390 are critical with 226 on ventilators and 164 without. There are 856 people undergoing oxygen therapy. On Monday, 1,862 tests were conducted by PMC, which took the cumulative total to 8.86 lakh, said Dr Ashish Bharti, PMC health chief.

With 2,834 fresh COVID cases in the state on Monday, the tally stands at 18,99,352. About 55 people passed away. The state’s toll stands at 48,801.

Apart from these, 6,053 people recovered. Since the outbreak, 17,89,958 people have battled the virus. There are 59,469 active COVID cases. The state recovery rate is at 94.24 per cent and case fatality at 2.57 per cent.
