MADURAI: The Madurai district police arrested a man for marrying a 17-year-old girl and having sex with her against her wish.
The accused has been identified as T Balamurugan, 31, of Othapatti near Kottanathampatti village in Madurai.
He married the minor girl in September. The incident came to light a couple of days ago when Childline received a phone call. Mahalakshmi, a social welfare department extension officer in Melur, conducted an inquiry and confirmed that the girl had not attained 18 years.
Based on a complaint from the officer, a case was registered under sections of the Child Marriage Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act on Monday.
The girl’s father was also booked.
