Water from Krishna river continues to flow into Chennai

CHENNAI: Krishna river water is continuing to flow into the city, with Andhra Pradesh releasing water from the Kandaleru reservoir. The inflow into the Poondi reservoir is at the rate of 700 cusecs (cubic feet per second).
A senior PWD official said the reservoirs at Srisailam, Somasila and Kandaleru on Sunday had a combined storage of 314 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) against the capacity of 361 tmcft and water from Andhra Pradesh would be released till the end of December.
The release in January, the official said, would depend on the crop-sowing pattern of farmers in Andhra Pradesh. "Based on their requirement, the quantity will be increased or decreased."
In Chennai city, Metrowater is supplying 655 million litres a day (MLD) to residents in the core areas and 114 MLD to those in the added areas on alternate days.
The rain in the catchment areas of the reservoirs has stopped, but the storage levels are comfortable. On Monday, the storage in the reservoir at Poondi reservoir was 3,038 mcft (million cubic feet) against the capacity of 3,231 mcft. Cholavaram had 806 mcft against the capacity of 1,081 mcft, Red Hills 3,058 mcft against the capacity of 3,300 mcft; Chembarambakkam 3,253 mcft against a capacity of 3,645 mcft and the fifth one at Kannankottai Thervoy Kandigai had 322 mcft against the capacity of 500 mcft. The five reservoirs together have 10,477 mcft of water.
Besides, Metrowater continues to draw 166MLD from the Veeranam lake in Cuddalore district which on Monday had a storage level of 1,158 mcft against the full capacity of 1,465 mcft, said the official.
