Renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar was born on 22 December 1887 in Erode Tamil Nadu. His birth anniversary is also celebrated as National Mathematics Day. At a very young age, he demonstrated an exceptional grasp of mathematics. In 1903, Ramanujan joined Government College in Kumbakonam. He failed in exams as he did not do well in non-mathematical subjects. In 1912, he started to work as a clerk at Madras Port Trust and kept indulged himself wholeheartedly in mathematics. Ramanujan sent some of his mathematical works to British mathematicians. Impressed with his work, Cambridge-based GH Hardy called him to London in 1913. In 1914, Ramanujan joined the Trinity College in London. In 1917, he was elected as a member of the London Mathematical Society. In 1918, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, youngest to achieve the feat. Ramanujan returned to India in 1919 owing to bad health. His health continued to deteriorate, and he died in 1920 at the age of 32. His genius has been regarded by mathematicians to be at par with that of Euler and Jacobi. He independently discovered nearly 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations). Ramanujan's work includes Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan theta function, partition formula and mock theta functions. Former PM Manmohan Singh declared his birth anniversary as National Mathematics Day.
