Cape Town City chairman John Comitis says Benni McCarthy's return to the Premiership is "a great thing for South African football".

The former Citizens head coach took up the reins at AmaZulu this week, after Ayanda Dlamini stepped aside with the club struggling at the start of the DStv Premiership season.

McCarthy has been out of a job since he was sacked by Comitis in 2019 and made an immediate impact by guiding his new team to a 3-1 win over Chippa United at the weekend.

The result ended a run of four games without a victory to leave the side in eighth place on the league standings, with nine points from eight games.

Speaking to KickOff, Comitis said: "That's a great thing for South African football, I'm glad he's back in the boxing ring.

"He's a great character for the game, he's passionate for football. He's given so much to the game, you know he has to be back, he has to be involved. You can't have people like that not involved in the game.

"I don't have advice; my only thing is that he was a great coach for us, and I wish him all the best. All I can say is he was a great coach for us and I'm very happy he's back."
