New AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy thrived in being back on the touchline as he guided his new team to a 3-1 victory over Chippa United on Sunday.

After going one-nil down to a 14th minute Isaac Nhlapo goal, Usuthu fought back, with Augustine Mulenga levelling on 23 minutes ahead of a brace from Luvuyo Memela (28', 55') to turn the tie on its head and secure the three points.

The result meant that AmaZulu picked up just their second win of the season, to leave them on nine points, from eight DStv Premiership games.

Speaking after the game, an upbeat McCarthy, who took over first team duties from Ayanda Dlamini, told SuperSport TV: "It was a pleasure to be back on the touchline and to bring out the best in these boys.

"We know Chippa are good on the ball, but we tried to stay composed and use Thembela Sikhakhane and Sibusiso Mabaliso and give more numbers. This is a good score and we should have capitalised more.

"Mulenga is a player that wants to get out more. If he is coming from the inside, he will get joy. I have to give credit to (Siphelele) Mthembu as well because he played his role well.

"It is a work in progress but it's nice that the boys are starting to enjoy their football again."

AmaZulu next face Bloemfontein Celtic on Sunday, 10 January 2020.
