MUMBAI: The school education department kicked off the special round of first-year junior college (FYJC) admission on Sunday. While students can sign up until December 22, the department will announce the merit list on December 24, at 11 am.

In Mumbai Metropolitan Region, 1.8 lakh seats are on offer, as per the update shared on the admission portal. With colleges having surrendered seats under various quotas for this round, the number of seats available in the open category has gone up from 50,286 in the third round to 81,473 for the special admission round.

For this round, all students can participate, but would have to give consent to be included. This includes, students who had cancelled their admission, not taken admission despite being allotted first preference and those rejected by junior colleges. The consent button will be available in the student login.

Admission under three quotas — in-house, management and minority — will continue simultaneously with over 37,000 seats on offer. Students can directly reach out to junior colleges to apply under the quota. Colleges are allowed to surrender vacant quota seats in this round.

Once allotted a seat in the special merit list on December 24, students will have until 5 pm on December 26 to confirm their place at the college. Education department officials said that details for further round of admission will be announced as per requirement and government approval. Until last year, the education department held multiple rounds on a first-come-first-served basis to allow students to claim vacant seats. Schedule for bi-focal admissions will be announced too.

With most colleges having filled up to 75% of seats, they will be allowed to commence online classes in the metro or offline classes, wherever permitted.
