Covid: 1,114 new cases, 15 more deaths in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: The number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu has dropped by 80% in the last 100 days and on Sunday stood at 9,593 after 1,114 fresh cases were recorded. The number of active cases was around 48,800 in the second week of September.
Tamil Nadu stands third in the country when it comes to active cases. Maharashtra (61,095) and Karnataka (14,497) are above TN on this list. The recovery rate too remained high at 97.3%. On Sunday, a total of 1,198 patients got discharged from hospitals. So far, 7,85,315 patients have recovered from the disease in TN.
But the case fatality ratio has continued to hover around 1.5% for more than six weeks now. TN's Covid toll increased to 11,983 with 15 more succumbing to the disease on Sunday. Thirty districts reported no deaths.
Hotspot Chennai continued to report the maximum number of deaths and fresh infections. Almost half the deceased and one-third of infected persons (235 new cases) were Chennai residents. Neighbouring districts of Chengalpet (81), Tiruvallur (57) and Kancheepuram (29), however, witnessed no deaths. Besides Chennai, Coimbatore is the only other TN district to have new cases in three digits (112). Tirupur is another western district where daily fresh cases hovered around the 50-mark for a week now.
The ten southern districts including Madurai (28), Kanyakumari (27) and Dindigul (12) reported fewer than 30 fresh infections.
