Stage set for Arunachal local body polls

Itanagar, Dec 21 (UNI) The stage is set for simultaneous Panchayat and Municipal
elections in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.
Altogether 4,89,423 electorate are eligible to exercise their franchise in the elections
to rural and two civic bodies—Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Pasighat
Municipal Council (PMC), at 1,472 polling stations spread across the state.
“We are geared up to conduct elections to Panchayat and Municipalities in a free
and fair manner tomorrow,” State Election Commission (SEC) Deputy Secretary
Habung Lampung said here on Monday.
The polling will begin at 0700 hours and will continue till 1600 hours, he said.
EVMs will be used for elections to the two civic bodies and ballot papers for the

He informed that as most of the polling stations are located far from district
headquarters, the polling teams have started moving from yesterday and they are
supposed to reach their respective polling booths by this evening.
The poll panel official, meanwhile, appealed to the people to extend their support
and cooperation for ensuring a free, fair and peaceful election.
“As a responsible citizen, I request everyone to maintain peace and exercise their
franchise freely without any fear or favour, purely on merit,” Habung said.
In view of Covid-19 pandemic, the SEC has made special arrangements by making
separate queues for persons with disabilities (PwDs) and elderly voters aged 80 and
above, he said, adding that Covid infected persons, if any, will have to come to polling
station one hour prior to end of voting, following all safety protocols.
Polling will be held for 141 Zilla Parishad constituencies and 1,702 GP seats as more
than 6,000 candidates have won uncontested. Of the 6,500 elected unopposed, included
99 ZPM and 6,401 GPM.
Out of 28 Wards under the two urban local bodies—IMC and PMC, polling will be held
for 23 Wards. Five out of 20 Wards in Itanagar were declared to have sent their Corporators
elected unopposed.
For the remaining 15 wards, 36 candidates are in the fray, including 15 are from BJP,
14 from Janata Dal (United), four from National People’s Party (NPP) and three from
Congress.
In Pasighat, all eight wards will go to the polls with altogether 17 candidates in fray.
Except for Ward No 3, all seven will witness a straight fight between the ruling BJP
and Opposition Congress. While Ward No 3 is set to witness a triangular fight with the
third party being the NPP.
Over 8,000 security personnel have been deployed across the state to ensure free,
fair and peaceful conduct of polls.
Out of the total polling booths, 536 have been identified as sensitive and 258
hypersensitive, police said, adding that two personnel will be deployed for normal
polling stations, three for sensitive and four for hypertensive.
