Taking the pandemic into account, the visitors’ bureau in Fergus Falls, Minnesota came up with a bleak forecast for the summer 2020 tourism season.
The forecast had said that the west-central Minnesota city could witness a loss of up to 35% in lodging tax revenue. However, a loss of that degree never quite materialized.
A line up of construction projects in the area brought in traffic to local businesses already used to serving out-of-town clientele, said Visit Fergus Falls Executive Director Jean Bowman. Event organizers organized creative ways to hold outdoor gatherings keeping social distancing in place — for example, the field behind the vacant and castle-like Fergus Falls State Hospital on several occasions was used to hold drive-in movie screenings and concerts. Hence, the pandemic ha surely brought in both short and long term changes in how travel and tourism used to function.
