Toyota hasn't let the cancellation of the 2020 SEMA show stop it from revealing two engineering concepts, most notably an A80 Targa-inspired open-top version of GR's straight-six sports car. It's a proper working one-off, with structural mods to ensure the design changes are functional. No word yet as to whether or not it signals a future production model (probably not given the existence of the BMW Z4) but it certainly looks the part.
The Sport Top gets a two-part lid that can be removed to expose a fully open cabin with no T-bar in the middle. That emphasises the efforts in re-engineering the underlying A90 frame, with Toyota having clawed back structural rigidity through the reinforcement of large lower sections - a not insignificant task given the A90 was always intended as coupe, unlike its BMW half-sibling.
Fans of the A80 might see the old car in the Sport Top's rear wing, which appears unchanged from the design that was used on the 2019 SEMA Supra. Unlike that 500hp concept, there's no mention of engine work to the B58 unit this time around, meaning the 2020 creation is structural engineering project only. As for the second demonstration of Toyota's ingenuity, behold the TRD-Sport Trailer. It is rather epic, with so much functionality and equipment packed into the trailer - including an elevated four-person tent, no less - that it's a wilderness-loving camper's wet dream.
Toyota reckons it comes with a "nearly endless" supply of details to enjoy, including fly fishing-pole holders, a custom-built toilet and bin, a refrigerator and a hot water heater, as well as water holding tanks and a slide-out sink and stove. Again, whether the manufacturer intends it for production is not revealed. But if staycationing continues into 2021, this looks like exactly the sort of thing many of us will need.
