Hyderabad, 21st December 2020: On the occasion of ‘National Brain Week’, the Indian Academy of Neurology(IAN) is organising a week long webinar session with top experts from around the country  from 18th– 24th December, 2020 between 6 p.m.– 7:30 p.m. daily.

The theme for this year is ‘My health my responsibility’. During the week, the emphasis will be on prevention of brain diseases and the importance of exercise, music and diet; said national convener of the event Dr. Chandrashekhar Meshram.

Neurologists from across the country will run for 3000 kms during the week to highlight the importance of physical exercise for brain health. There will be sessions by experts in the field on various topics like headache, vertigo, stroke, loss of vision, multiple sclerosis, gait imbalance, diseases of the nerves and muscles, myasthenia gravis, ataxia, etc. The role of neuro rehabilitation for better recovery will also be emphasized upon.

Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) is a scientific body representing neurologists of the country. “It aims to help in amelioration of human distress particularly among socially and economically backward sections of the society for charitable purposes,” said Dr JMK Murthy, Head – Department of Neurology at CARE Hospitals, Hyderabad.

“For the last few years, the Academy has been organising public education and awareness programs on brain health and brain diseases during National Brain Week staring 18th December, which is the foundation day for the academy,” he added.

Speaking about the initiative, Dr Nirmal Surya, President Elect of IAN said, “Good brain health is a state in which every individual can realize their own abilities and optimize their cognitive, emotional, psychological and behavioural functioning to cope with life situations. Lifestyle has a profound impact on your brain health. What you eat and drink, how much you exercise, how well you sleep, the way you socialize and how you manage stress are all critically important to your brain health.”

“There is lot of research going on about brain diseases and the information should reach general public so as to improve their health,” said Dr Pramod Pal, Ex-President of the association and the man behind starting this initiative.

“Every year, the programs are organized physically in auditoriums, but due to the ongoing pandemicwe will conduct online sessions daily from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm,” said Dr Gagandeep Singh, former secretary, IAN. The sessions by various doctors will be oriented for understanding of the general public. General physicians, family physicians, patients, their care takers and lay people should not miss this opportunity.

Many new developments and advances have further enhanced the speciality in recent times and given hope to people suffering from neurological disorders and this week long webinar will hopefully help develop new ways of treatment and shared knowledge, said Dr U.
