Apple supplier Wistron on Saturday, admitted to having committed payment flaws in its manufacturing facility at Narasapura near Bengaluru, and said the company is restructuring its teams to ensure such incidents do not repeat.
“Since the unfortunate events at our Narasapura facility we have been investigating and have found that some workers were not paid correctly, or on time. We deeply regret this and apologize to all of our workers,” Wistron said in a media statement in response to the violent incident that saw workers vandalising the factory upset over payment issues on December 12.
The company said the Narasapura facility was new and it has recognised the mistakes made while expanding. “Some of the processes we put in place to manage labor agencies and payments need to be strengthened and upgraded. We are taking immediate action to correct this, including disciplinary action,” the company management said.
Holding the company’s vice-president who oversees the business in India responsible, Wistron said, the person is removed from the job. “We are also enhancing our processes and restructuring our teams to ensure these issues cannot happen again,” Wistron said in a first statement made following the incident.
The iPhone manufacturer also said the company’s priority is to ensure all workers are fully compensated immediately and that it is working hard to achieve that and it has also come with several channels to address employees' concerns.
“We have established an employee assistance program for workers at the facility. We also set up a 24-hour grievance hotline in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and English to ensure all workers can voice any concerns they may have anonymously. We are deeply committed to our business and employees in India. We are working diligently on corrective actions to ensure this does not happen again.”
The company has estimated the losses due to the violence at around Rs 50 crore.
