MADURAI: A first year student from
Madurai Medical College tested
Covid-19 positive and is currently under treatment, the college authorities confirmed on Saturday.
College dean
Dr J Sangumani said that the Trichy-based student was asymptomatic and his CT scan showed no lung involvement.
“Around 50 contacts were identified and swab samples were collected from them. All tested negative so far. We are now ensuring all students get tested for Covid-19 as a precautionary measure,” he added.
As per protocol, all students had submitted results of their Covid-19 test reports on the day of reopening and only those who tested negative were allowed to return to college.
“However, test results are largely redundant after 24-48 hours and anyone can test positive later at any point of time. The student tested negative initially but now is positive,” said a
senior health official.
The news of the Madurai Medical College student testing Covid-19 positive comes days after more than 200 college students in Chennai, a majority from IIT Madras tested Covid-19 positive.
However, health officials and Madurai Medical College authorities assured that as of now there is no threat of a Covid-19 cluster emerging among the college students in Madurai.
