Elaborate security arrangements made for local body polls

Itanagar, Dec 18 (UNI) Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the Arunachal Pradesh Police (APP) for the conduct of the local body elections in the state simultaneously in a single phase on December 22.

Briefing newsmen about the security arrangements for the Panchayat and Municipal elections, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa informed that 7,517 state police personnel, including civil police, APPBn and IRBn, and nine companies of CRPF (comprising around 700 personnel) will be deployed in 1496 polling stations spread across the state to ensure free, fair and peaceful conduct of polls.

Out of 1496 polling booths, 536 have been identified as sensitive while 258 are hypersensitive, the top police official said, adding that two personnel will be deployed for normal polling stations, three for sensitive and four for hypertensive.

The IGP also appealed to the citizens to maintain peace and peacefully participate in the election.

“Our main job in the ensuing election is to ensure that the voters exercise their franchise without fear or coercion from any quarter, and law and order is maintained at all the places before, during and after the elections,” he asserted.

Asked about whether any arrangements made for police personnel on election duty, “We are asking for postal ballot for police personnel on poll duty.”

Itanagar Capital Region (ICR) SP Jimmy Chiram, who was also present during the press briefing, informed that since Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect, the capital police have so far seized more than 400 litres of liquor, 177 daos (machetes), recovered few arms besides baseball sticks and weapon type items.

He informed that there are 67 polling stations under the jurisdiction of Capital police, of which 47 fall under Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC), 19 under three Zilla Parishad constituencies-Batt Ganga, Banderdewa and Borum, and one under lower Balijan.

Of the 67 polling booths, 22 have been identified as normal, 30 as sensitive and 15 as hypersensitive and accordingly security forces will be deployed, the SP said.

Since the polling day will be a holiday, Chiram informed that the inter-state border will be sealed.

Giving the latest updates on the recent Vijaynagar incident in Changlang district, the IGP informed that so far 26 people have been arrested in connection with the December 11 arson. Except nine all are in police custody.
Of the six cases registered under several sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC), five have been transferred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Itanagar, he disclosed.

Asked about involvement of any anti-social elements, the IGP said, “As of now it is a matter of investigation. We are looking into all possibilities if there is any foreign involvement or foreign hand in the incident that will also be unearthed. We are looking into every aspect of it.”

“As of now, the situation in Vijaynagar is peaceful. Normalcy has returned,” he said.
