PUNE: A weekend picnic of a team of 14 people from Pune turned tragic on Friday when three of them drowned in the sea at Anjarle beach near Dapoli, about 198 km from the district.
The locals have rescued three others. The bodies have been recovered from the sea and sent for post-mortem.
The Dapoli police have identified the deceased as Akshay Rakhilkar (37) of Sambhajinagar, Pimpri Chinchwad, Vikas Shrivastav (25) of Karvenagar, Pune and Manoj Gavande (24) of Vishal Nagar, Pimpri Chinchwad.
The Dapoli police said a team of 14 people from Pune had reached Dapoli on Friday morning in a mini bus.
After the breakfast, all of them had gone to Murud. They reached Anjarle beach around 12pm. "Some of them had entered into the sea waters for swimming," said an officer from the Dapoli police.
They failed to gauge the depth and began drowning. There friends at the bank raised an alarm following which locals jumped into the sea and rescued three of them. "The bodies of the other three were recovered later," the officer said.
