UNI summit on transforming fisheries sector via digitization on Dec 22

New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) Aimed at transforming the fisheries sector through digitization, India's premier news agency -- United News of India -- will host first-of-its-kind Virtual Summit on 'Criticality of Transforming Fisheries Industry: Ushering Digitization to Support PMMSY on December 22, Tuesday.
Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Pratap Chandra Sarangi will deliver the inaugural address at the summit, his office confirmed earlier this week.
The summit comes at a time when the government is fast-tracking the sector’s rapid modernization. In September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the transformative Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which seeks to accelerate growth in the sector and usher a ‘Blue Revolution’ in India.
With an estimated investment of Rs 25,000 crore over five years as part of the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' mission, the new measure is yet another demonstration of the importance the government places on the fishery sector and, therefore, it is no surprise that a number of ministries and departments are actively engaging on the crucial subject of modernising the sector to spur its long-term sustainable growth.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harsh Vardhan has also confirmed his participation in the event and is likely to address the summit via a video address, his office said.
Given the crucial nature of the discussions on this strategic growth sector, and the role modern communications technologies are playing in the sector, the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, has also given its full official support and blessings to all the deliberations at the summit.
Other eminent speakers at the summit include: Dr. Rajeev Ranjan, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India, Mr Parthsarathi Trivedi, CEO and Co-Founder Skylo Technologies, VK Dadhwal, Director , IIST, Lt Gen PJS Pannu,Former Deputy Chief Of Integrated Defence Staff, Dr Balakrishnan Nair, Director, INCOIS, Dr D Bhalla, IAS (Retd), Mr. Ganpati Mangre, Chairman, North Kanra District Co-Operative Fish Marketing Federation, Vikas Sharma, CMD - Centre for Strategy and leadership.
The fisheries industry in India is huge with its very long coastline making the country the fourth-largest producer of fish in the world, which is largely because nearly 10 million people residing in over 4,000 coastal regions are engaged in fishery activity and are dependent on it to earn a living.
India holds great potential for both inland and marine fishing. It has huge reservoirs for fishing. The fisheries industry heavily contributes to the country’s GDP, with nearly $70million pouring into the exchequer every year.
The Centre has undertaken several positive initiatives and policies led by the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Fisheries in recent years to boost the growth of the fisheries industry in India.
Not surprisingly, the sector has caught the attention of foreign investors in recent years attracted by the liberal policies of the government.
Over the past five years, the Government of India has achieved significant success in many critical areas within the overall push to encourage an atmosphere of innovation that capitalizes on modern digital and connectivity technologies.
The government believes that modern digital technologies will continue to play a crucial role in the sector’s transformation and contribute to the success of the PMMSY program.
Earlier this month, in a demonstration of how public-private collaborations were taking wing in this area, state-owned BSNL partnered with Skylotech India to launch the world's first Satellite-Based Narrowband IoT (Internet of Things) Network. The network is likely to be extremely beneficial for the fisheries sector.
