Imphal, December 17 2020: Over 200 people have cried foul after they allegedly received loan clearance notifications from Punjab National Bank for loans they never took.

Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Sougaijam Inaobi from Kakching Wairi said he and some other persons received a written notification on December 10 from the Lok Adalat to clear the outstanding loan amount to Punjab National Bank (PNB) Imphal Branch.

However he alleged that notification issued to them, they went to PNB, Imphal branch and met the bank Manager and informed him that they never took any sort of loans from the bank and requested him to provide them with a clarification stating that they are not indebted loanees.

To this the Manager asked them to submit an application stating that they are not the loanees of the bank and he gave assurance that he will take up all possible steps at his level.

As per the Manager's suggestion, an application was submitted directly to the Manager of PNB, Imphal Branch on December 15 but unfortunately they did not get any form of clarification statement from the bank's side.

He further stated that it's a shameful incident for them as they are being portrayed as indebted loanees with huge outstanding amounts of which they have no clue.

Inaobi appealed to the Chief Minister, authorities concerned and the public to look into the matter at the earliest and arrest those involved and give them befitting punishment so that such acts are not repeated.

He further cautioned the public to be vigilant as there is a high probability of some people operating such loan scams.

More than 200 people have been affected, most of them are from different parts of Kakching and few from outside Kakching as well.
