Ukhrul CEO inaugurates 1st Parkia Festival / awareness programme at New Tusom village

Ukhrul, December 17 2020: Chief Executive Officer (CEO), ADC Ukhrul Polly Makan today opened the 1st 3-day village level Parkia Festival cum awareness programme, that showcased locally produce amidst a mesmerizing display of folk dance, choreography and music in the presence of departmental officers, headmen and villagers at New Tusom village ground.

Polly Makan hoisted the village flag, followed by the unveiling of the festival monument as the chief guest of the programme, Polly Makan was elated on seeing the greeneries surrounded by beautiful mountains, clean environment and fresh air.

She also acknowledged the potential of growing parkia at New Tusom village.

She urged the local growers for proper management to grow plants and further asked them to build good relations with the horticulture department to receive technical input for growing healthily.

The CEO also stated that business related to parkia can boost the local economy.

The VDC secretary Chinaorar, while delivering a keynote address, stated that the festival was organised to promote parkia plantation in the village.

Informing that the first parkia was planted by late M John Vashum in 1964 in the region, and gradually increasing the population to 15,000, Chinaorar continued that around 10,000 parkia plants can be harvested from this year onwards.

Later, the chief guest along with the village leaders inspected the stalls of the festival.

Bunches of parkia cost Rs 150 in the village.

Besides parkia, varieties of locally available organic vegetables such as pumpkins, bean seeds, chillies, sugarcane, rice, gooseberries, sesame seeds, oranges, bananas, garlic, yam, lemons, snacks, dry fruits and juices were put up for sale.

While the evening session of the festival was held as an awareness programme for parkia growers by inviting experts from Imphal.

The 3-day festival cum awareness programme is being organized by the Village Development Council of New Tusom village in collaboration with Horticulture Dept.
