An IT welfare group, Nascent Information Technology Employees’ Senate (NITES), met Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Gopichand Padalkar, who is also aBharatiya Janata Party spokesperson, and apprised him of problems faced by workforce from information technology, information technology-enabled services (ITeS), business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sectors.
For the first time, the issue has been raised in the legislative session (winter) and efforts are being taken to establish laws ongovernment level .
Issues like maternity leave, COVID leave and severance are now being discussed by officials of the state government.
More than 45,000 techies have lost their jobs during the pandemic.
Some of them belonged to top IT companies and were denied rights and payments during termination. While the unions and employees marched to thelabour office from time to time, no ground-level action was taken.
The labour commissioner’s office sent notices to these companies from time-to-time, but there was no follow up whatsoever. The company officials would never turn up for the meetings for further discussions.
MLC Padalkar said, “Thousands of employees were laid off in Pune’s IT companies — Wipro, Cognizant and Infosys were some of the big names involved. I have raised the issue in the council and requested the state government to look into this matter and come up with a solution to better the situation.”
Harprit Saluja, general secretary of NITES, told Mirror that the organisation has raised issues of over 78,000 employees since the lockdown.
They have knocked the doors of chief minister’s office, labour minister, labour department and district magistrate to let them know about illegal terminations, layoffs and salary cuts of employees. “No justice was served after rigorous follow-ups,” he said, adding, “Denial of maternity benefits, crèche facility, no overtime and shift allowances, denial of severance pays, deduction of leaves, no quarantine leaves, 90-day notice period and other issues were faced by them.”
An employee from Capgemini said that the leaves were cut and no extra leaves were allowed since they were working from home. “Also, a couple of my colleagues were not given projects which hampered their performance,” the employee said.
Another employee of Ebix added, “The company terminated me right amidst the lockdown. I have faced troubles with my full and final amount.”
