THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Brushing aside the demands for a reduction in school syllabus, the state government on Thursday resolved to conduct SSLC and Plus Two annual examinations as usual, from March 17 to 31.

A high-level meeting convened and chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan decided to conduct the examinations, adhering to Covid-19 protocols. According to the decisions arrived at the meeting, schools would be partially opened on January 1, not for regular classes, but for helping students to prepare for practical (lab) examinations and clear doubts regarding the lessons taught over the classes broadcast on Victers television channel and the school level WhatsApp groups. School-level counselling facilities would be also arranged so as to help students to ward off their mental tension while preparing for the annual examination. With the permission of parents, students of class 10 and 12 may go to the school where teachers would arrange them revision classes and doubt clearance in a staggered manner. The state education department had started school academic year on June 1 itself by broadcasting lessons on Victers television channel run by the government.

The high-level meeting has also decided to start final year degree and post-graduate classes in the first week of January. Classes would be arranged in a staggered manner with half the strength of students in classes at any given time. Classes might be also arranged on a shift basis.

Classes for medical students, from second year onwards, would also begin in the second week of January. The classes for agriculture and fisheries university students would also start in January.

Health Minister KK Shailaja, general education minister C Raveendranath, higher education minister KT Jaleel, agriculture minister V S Sunilkumar, Fisheries minister J Mercykutty Amma and education and health department heads participated in the meeting.
