Cash, gold, silver, diamonds: Treasure trove for TN anti-corruption bureau

Chennai, Dec 16 : It was a virtual treasure trove of over cash, gold, silver, diamonds, fixed deposits, and property documents - for the officials of Tamil Nadu's anti-corruption bureau between October 1 to December 14 at various government offices and at the residences of corrupt state government officials.

According to Direcorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), it had a rich haul of Rs 6.96 crore in unaccounted cash, 7.2 kgs of gold, 9.8 kgs of silver, 10.52 carats of diamonds, fixed deposits of Rs 37 lakh and other documents.

The DVAC said topping the corrupt officials list was M. Pannerselvam, Zonal Officer, Pollution Control Board, Vellore from whom cash of over Rs 3.25 crore, 450 sovereigns of gold and 6.5 kgs of silver were seized.

Next in the hall of shame came Pandian, Superintendent, Environment Department, Panagal Maligai, Chennai from whom the DVAC seized 3.081 kgs of gold, 3.343 kgs of silver, diamonds of 10.52 carats, fixed deposits of Rs 37 lakh and 18 property documents with a total value of Rs 1.37 crore and cash of Rs 88,500.

The anti-corruption bureau had also raided a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police working in Registration Department in Salem and seized 34 sovereigns of gold worth Rs 13 lakh, house documents in his name located at the post Anna Nagar West, Chennai, worth Rs 63.7 lakh and his family members' bank pass books containing saving amount about of Rs 1 crore.

The anti-corruption bureau had carried out 127 surprise checks at various state government offices across the state.

This apart, DVAC said, 33 government servants were arrested in the state between October 1 and December 14 for demanding and receiving bribes from the public and seized Rs 62.8 lakh.
