COIMBATORE: Three corporation school students from Coimbatore will represent Tamil Nadu at the annual Kala Utsav organised by the ministry of education.
The three students -- S Dhanushya, from class XII of RC Girls Higher Secondary School Ondipudur, D Yashwanth, studying in class XII in R K Srirangammal Higher Secondary School and S Krithika a class IX student from Kinathukidavu Government Higher Secondary School will be participating in vocal music (folk), folk instrumental and visual art 3D categories.
The national level event that is usually conducted in New Delhi, this year will be held online in the second and third week of January, due to the pandemic.
In the state-level Kala Utsav qualification competition that was conducted online from December 8 to 15, the three students bagged the first prize in their categories and will represent the state in the national competition.
Dhanushya was selected for playing the 'parai' instrument.
Krithika bagged the state-level prize for creating a sand sculpture depicting people performing the traditional 'mayilattam' or peacock dance. Yashwanth sang a traditional folk song that is usually sung for street plays in the southern districts of the state.
The students who are excited at the prospect of competing at the national level are disappointed that the event will be conducted online, and that they can’t travel to New Delhi.
"I have travelled to various districts like Salem and Thanjavur and tell my mother and sister about the places, how it looks, food we get there, where we stayed and how people speak, because both of them don’t get to travel outside the city at all,” says Krithika whose both parents are daily wage labourers. She added that she was excited to travel to Chennai to participate in the event.
