Meghalaya pressure groups demands ILP, burn effigies

Shillong, Dec 17 (UNI) Four prominent pressure groups in Meghalaya on Thursday held a protest rally burning the effigies of the BJP-led NDA Government and the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 against the inordinate delay of the Central Government to implement the Inner Line Permit regime in the State.
The four pressure groups -- Khasi Students’ Union, Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, Ri-Bhoi Youth Front and Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People - held the protest at Motphran, the busiest area in the Meghalaya’s state Capital, and threatened to operate the entry-exit point themselves at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district if the Conrad Sangma-led Government fails to inaugurate it on December 21.
People visiting Meghalaya would have to produce their identity card and would also have to state about their duration of stay and the place and furnish proof of accommodation during their stay at the entry-exit point.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was supposed to inaugurate the entry-exit point, but as he tested positive for COVID-19 the inauguration was postponed.
Burning the effigies, the members of the organizations said the entry-exit point or the facilitation centre was supposed to be made functional by now. However, the State Government has postponed its inauguration to December 21.
“We have taken a decision that if the entry point is not inaugurated on December 21 we will operate ourselves and the government will have to pay the salary,” FKJGP President, Wellbirth Ranee said at the protest rally.
Lambasting the government on the delay in implementing ILP in the State, KSU President, Lambokstar Marngar vowed to continue to fight till ILP is implemented in the State.
Meghalaya Assembly had adopted a resolution urging the Central Government to implement the Inner Line Permit, but the Central Government has said that it is still examining the matter.
The Meghalaya Assembly on December 19 last year had adopted a unanimous resolution urging the Central Government to include Meghalaya under the purview of Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation 1873 and implement ILP.
The resolution was in response to the widespread demand coming from across the state for introduction of ILP in the state after the contentious CAA was enacted by the Central Government.
HNYF President, Sadon Blah said the Centre seems not to respect the resolution passed in the State Assembly, despite all the 60 MLAs have passed it in one voice and have favoured the implementation of ILP in Meghalaya.
“We won’t let the indigenous communities to be minority in our own land,” Blah said, while questioning why the Central Government extended the ILP regime in Manipur after the passage of CAB in Parliament, but not in Meghalaya.
