Save $300: The MSI GF65 Thin Intel Core i5 gaming laptop is down to $699 with free shipping at Walmart as of Dec. 17  — but it'll probably arrive the day after Christmas.

Shopping for a gaming laptop for someone without any more information than "gaming laptop?"

The MSI GF65 Thin is a nice starter device that you can feel confident in gifting, and it's on sale at Walmart for $699 — a $300 price drop and nice contrast to one with similar configurations on Amazon that's still $997.

MSI is no stranger to budget-friendly gaming laptops. The GF63 Thin, a sister model, made Mashable's list of best gaming laptops under $1,000, with writer Dylan Haas designating it as the best lightweight model. The GF65 is even more of a beast, armed with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti as its GPU rather than the GTX 1650. Laptop Mag breaks down the comparison nicely, but long story short: If you can find the 1600 Ti for cheaper, hop on that like your life depends on it.

Supplementing the beefy graphics processor are other features like an i5 six-core CPU (ideal for handling school apps and Zoom without sending the fan into meltdown mode), a 1920 x 1080 display stretched between ultra-thin bezels, and 512GB SSD. It's all packed into a thin notebook (a nice change of pace from the typical clunkiness of gaming laptops) that weighs no more than the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The keyboard is not only backlit, but has a customizable lighting display. Reviewers are also impressed with the built-in speakers that aim to create in-game 3D surround sound.

Clearing up some drama in the reviews, this listing is for the Intel Core i5 (9300H) model — not the i7.
