Donald Trump told his advisers that he wanted to stay in the White House on inauguration day, according to reports.

However, the president’s advisers do not believe he will go through with the threat, with one aide telling CNN that Mr Trump was just throwing a “temper tantrum” and is “going to leave”.

Since there is no precedent in US history of the head of state refusing to hand over power, experts have in recent months have debated potential responses to such a situation.

On Monday, the Electoral College confirmed Joe Biden’s victory in last month’s election by 306 votes to 232 over Mr Trump.

This did not stop the president from spewing more unsubstantiated claims about the election being rigged.
