In a major haul, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths on Wednesday morning foiled a bid to smuggle gold by air and seized 1 kilogram of gold worth Rs 50 lakh from two passengers at Dabolim airport.
Highly placed sources at Dabolim airport have disclosed that two passengers Asghar Ali and Mohammed Samaan were detained by DRI sleuths.
Both the passengers are natives of Karnataka and had arrived at Dabolim airport on Wednesday morning by 6E8445 Air Indigo flight from Dubai.
The gold was in paste form and both the passengers had made capsules to contain the gold.
While one passenger had attempted to hide 4 capsules in his under garments, the other passenger had hidden 3 capsules in his rectum and attempted to smuggle the gold.
The gold was recovered from the passengers and seized under the provision of Customs Act 1962.
The DRI sleuths later detained the passengers for enquiry and further investigation is underway.
