India to have sui generis size standards for apparels

New Delhi, Dec 16 (KNN) To develop the sizes of garments unique to Indian body, the ‘India Size’ Project has been launched.
The information was shared by Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani through a tweet.
The initiative to have India’s own size chart will benefit both manufacturers and consumers as sizes used are either the European or US standards neither of which fit well to Indians.
This website (nift.ac.in/indiasize/) will invite people to register for the survey that will be carried out for sizing standardisation.
It is an initiative of ministry of textiles to develop standard body sizes for Indian apparel sector to address the prevailing disparities and inconsistencies in provided fits.
The project will entail gathering anthropometric data pan India from more than 25000 (Twenty-Five Thousand) male and female persons between the age group of 15 years and 65 years using human safe 3D whole body scanning technology.
The created body size chart will help national and international retailers and manufacturers to produce goods which are best suited for Indian body types and create a balance between demand and supply of well fitted garments.
Apart from apparel, the findings of the study will have ramifications across various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, fitness & sport, art, computer gaming, etc. where the insights from this data can produce ergonomically designed products which are well suited for the Indian population.
It provides a better understanding of the target population / consumer through data driven correlation of anthropometry and demographics.
There is lower market risks through optimizing efficiency of size charts by increased percentage of target consumers that would fit into the available sizes hence increased sales and customer satisfaction.
