HP records 22 pc decline in road fatalities this year

Shimla, Dec 16 (UNI) The Hill state, one the most accident-prone states, witnessed a sharp decline in accidents this year compared to the last year.
The experts attributed it to the COVID-induced lockdown which lasted five months in the state.
State Police released the accident figures of road mishaps which showed decline in the number of incidents as it come down to 23 per cent and also shows decline in accident-related casualties this year (22 per cent).
Till November 11 this year, Himachal witnessed over two thousand road accidents, resulting in 788 deaths and 2,855 injuries, according to the data released by the police.
The number of accidents, deaths and injuries has fallen by 23 per cent, 22 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively, as compared to the corresponding period last year.
State records an average, around three thousand accidents leading to 1,200 casualties.
"If we compare this with the 100 or so odd murders that take place in the state every year, it would astonishingly reveal that road accidents are the biggest threat to human life in our state,” the police cases figures revealed.
Since being hilly terrain and rough roads conditions and inclement weather, number of vehicles rolling down in the steep hills and fell down in gorge, causing multiple casualties and life affecting injuries.
The police said that as per the 2019 report by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Himachal despite its low population, has ranked 22nd in terms of number of road accidents and 20th in terms of road accident-related deaths in the country in the last few years.
"It may be because each accident in the state results in more than one death, and sometimes in case of accidents involving large vehicles, the casualties may even be in double digits in a single accident," said the police.
It said that multi-pronged measures are required to mitigate accidents through efforts by various government agencies including the transport department, national highways authority, state public works department, the police and also the people.
"However, practically on the ground, it is primarily the HP police and the people who are carrying such onerous responsibility on their shoulders. Although the police has meagre resources and is left wanting greater cooperation from other stakeholders, yet with the cooperation of the public, it has been making constant endeavours to reduce the incidence of road accidents," the police, said in the statement.
