New Delhi: The dates for all the four sessions (February, March, April and May 2021) of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Main) were announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Wednesday. Each session will have four exam days and each day will have two shifts. The computer based competitive exam for admission to engineering and architecture courses will be for the first time offered in 13 languages from 2021.

Since 2016 the JEE (Main) has been offered in English, Hindi and Gujarat, candidates can now also opt to take the test in 10 other vernacular languages – Assamese, Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

The NTA has opened the registration from Wednesday and will continue till January 16, 2021 and aspirants can register for all the four sessions and make payment for all the sessions. In case a candidate does not want to appear in the session for which fee has already been paid, it will be refunded by NTA.

While the pandemic situation and the uncertainty of Board and other exam schedule prompted the agency to start offering the test four times from 2021 itself, this move according to NTA, “will give multiple opportunities to the candidates to improve their scores in the examination if they are not able to give their best in one attempt and will reduce the chances of dropping a year and droppers would not have to waste a full year.” Also in case a candidate has Board Examination in a particular month, or is unable to appear due to COVID-19 or due to reasons beyond control, the candidate can choose a different month to take the JEE (Main) 2021.

While candidates can register for one or more sessions right now, the application window will be re-opened briefly immediately after the declaration of results of February, March and April sessions.

NTA will release the scores at the end of each session. For the final merit the best of the NTA scores of the students will be considered. The all India merit list taking best of the NTA scores of the students will be prepared at the end of the fourth session (May) and NTA will thereafter release the all India rank list of the qualified candidates.

The NTA conducts the JEE (Main) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes as well as architecture and planning courses at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded technical institutions. Several other engineering colleges and universities also accept the JEE (Main) scores of admission in various States. The test is also an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced) which is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for admission.
