A winter storm is headed for Utah on Thursday, just in time for the morning commute north of Salt Lake City — and will affect the evening commute up and down the Wasatch Front.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will move into northern Utah on Thursday morning and spread south in the afternoon and evening. A winter weather advisory has been issued for the Wasatch Mountains, the western Uinta Mountains, the Wasatch Plateau/Book Cliffs and Utah’s central mountains from 8 a.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday, with total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches expected.

There’s a 90% chance of snow in Salt Lake City on Thursday, with accumulations of 2 to 4 inches expected. Temperatures will reach about 40 degrees before the cold front arrives, then fall to the 30s during the day and to the mid-20s overnight.

Provo can expect 2 to 4 inches during the day Thursday, and another 2 to 4 inches Thursday night. Snow is in the forecast as far north as the Idaho border (3 to 5 inches) and as far south as Utah’s Sevier County (1 to 3 inches).

There’s a 30% chance of snow in Salt Lake City early Friday, with accumulations of less than an inch possible, before the last of the storm moves out. Friday will be the coldest day of the week, with a high of 29 and an overnight low of 17. It is forecast to reach 30 on Saturday and 36 on Sunday, with overnight lows in the low to mid-20s.

There’s no more snow in the forecast until Tuesday, when there’s a “slight chance,” according to the weather service.

There’s a 30% chance of rain or snow in southern Utah on Thursday morning, but little or no accumulation is expected in the St. George area, where the temperature is expected to hit 50. The forecast is for sunny skies, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 20s and 30s, through Tuesday.
