BHUBANESWAR: Five-year-old girl, who was allegedly abducted and killed in Nayagarh district in July, was 'raped' before being 'murdered', police sources revealed on Wednesday.
"Medical examination/postmortem earlier could not determine the sexual assault on her as her body was found in highly decomposed condition. But we found semen stains on the deceased's cloth. This clearly indicated she was raped. Motive of the murder was sexual assault," said a senior police officer.
A special investigation team (SIT), which was constituted by the state government last month to probe the sensitive case following a massive public outrage and political slugfest, has submitted its preliminary inquiry report in the Orissa high court on Wednesday.
The minor had gone missing while playing outside her home in Nayagarh district on July 14. Her decomposed body was found near her home on July 23. The incident triggered statewide furore and political slugfest after her parents attempted self-immolation outside the assembly here a few days ago in protest against the police inaction for five months.
Amid protests from opposition BJP and Congress, the state government ordered a probe by a special investigation team (SIT) under the supervision of the Orissa high court. Inspector-in-charge of Nayagarh Sadar police station was suspended and the local sub-divisional police officer transferred for poor investigation and negligence in the case.
