AMBALA:
Haryana health minister Anil Vij, who was undergoing treatment for
Covid-19 at Rohtak-based Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS), was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram late on Tuesday evening. Doctors decided to shift the minister after his condition worsened following plasma therapy at PGIMS on Tuesday morning, sourced told TOI.
PGIMS Rohtak medical superintendent (MS) Dr Pushpa Dahiya said, “After minister Vij tested positive for Covid-19, his CT scan showed infection spreading in both lungs. Because of this, he was shifted to PGIMS, Rohtak. He got oxygen therapy, steroid therapy and antibiotics here.”
“When he came here on Saturday, he was on minimal oxygen therapy and gradually, there was more lung involvement. His x-ray showed his condition slightly declining. We were not comfortable with a few parametres,” said Dr Dahiya.
She said Vij was given plasma therapy during his treatment at PGIMS, Rohtak and he also had fever. The team, she said, expected the therapy to work but on Tuesday, Vij suffered an acute episode of worsening hypoxia and his oxygen requirement was very high. “We suspected some other issues in the lungs. We were able to stabilise him by afternoon. Our team discussed that the minister is diabetic, hypertensive and also has thyroid. In case of chronic diseases, organs are a bit compromised,” she added.
“In certain situations, some high-end equipment is required because the minister also has cardiac issues. Our team discussed everything with his family for their consent and explained the situation to them. We gave them options of shifting him to AIIMS in Delhi or Medanta in Gurgaon. The family discussed the issue with the minister and they decided to go to Medanta, so he was shifted there on Tuesday evening,” said Dr Dahiya.
About the present condition of Vij, Dr Dahiya said, “When he left from Rohtak, he was critical. We shifted him on high-flow oxygen therapy. He was talking normally but there is the involvement of both his lungs.”
Vij had tested positive for Covid-19 in Ambala on December 5.
